Science is more than a body of knowledge. It is a way of thinking, of questioning the universe. ~ Carl Sagan

Students questioning the universe! That’s what students demonstrated at the 8th grade Science Fair at Skinner Middle School on December 5th. Community Resources Inc. (CRI) was honored to coordinate the fair which recognized the work of 200 8th grade scientists.

Topics of the students’ research were varied and interesting. Gone are the days of Styrofoam solar systems and foaming volcanoes. Topics ranged from “The effect of stress on test performance” to “The effect of air pressure on soccer ball distance”. The winning project was titled “The Effect of Wind and Water on the Spread of Radioactivity from Rocky Flats.”

To create the fair CRI called upon volunteer scientists from the community to serve as judges. Students met one-on-one with a judge, who evaluated the project utilizing a 50-point rubric. The judges then reviewed the 20 “finalists” and selected the top three projects. Many thanks to these 22 terrific folks for sharing their time and love of science with the students.

It is our hope that more schools will choose to offer their students the opportunity to “question the universe”. CRI is always available to help with the planning for and coordination of a science fair. Just give us a call!
