Shining Moments During Covid

Students have missed out on so many wonderful opportunities throughout the COVID 19 pandemic, but one bright spot over this time period has been the continuation of Community Resources’ Academic Mentors Project. Now, more than ever, students are benefiting from connections with like-minded adults who are sharing their careers and passions, and are inspiring students to follow their dreams. During National Mentoring Month we celebrate these wonderful volunteers who are creating engaging learning experiences (virtually and in-person) for our DPS students.

Under the guidance of her mentor, Marcus Chaknova, Research Scientist and Educator with OceanFirst Institute, Skinner 8th grader Avalon Johnson will be introduced to the world of marine biology and get an in-depth look at Marcus’ work in marine engineering. Marcus will tour Avalon through the aquatics robotics lab, show her 3D printers in action and teach her all about remotely operated underwater vehicles (ROVs) that are designed and built in Boulder, Colorado!

Noel Community Arts School student Exarius Martin is interested in electrical engineering. Under the guidance of his Academic Mentor, Laura Callahan, he’ll be learning all about UV disinfection lighting designed and manufactured by PURO Lighting. What a perfect mentorship experience during a pandemic!

During the 2021-2022 school year Community Resources’ Academic Mentors Project will match 80 students with community volunteers, with over 85% of mentors being new to the program. If you are interested in sharing your career or passion with a deserving student, please contact Laura Kent, Program Manager at laura_kent@dpsk12.org
