CRI in a Covid World—An Update from Sue

To say that this has been a year filled with change is nothing short of an understatement. As we face the known and the unknown, the challenges are daunting. Yet I believe that arising from this will be new opportunities, new platforms, and new programs that will bring engaging learning opportunities to the children of Denver.

CRI is excited to be entering our 49th year of serving the students, staff, and families of Denver Public Schools. However, this year is going to look very different from past years. With students often “learning from home” and with outside visitors not allowed in schools that have in-person learning, CRI’s programming has moved to the virtual world. I am thrilled by the enthusiasm with which our volunteers and program partners have risen to the occasion. Mentors are meeting with their students virtually.  Programs and presenters in our 700+ Classroom Speakers catalog are developing ways to bring their information and enthusiasm to students via pre-recorded programs or live, interactive presentations.  Hopefully, we will be able to electronically connect our terrific science fair judges with students and their projects during science fair season. And we have only just begun!

Sadly, some of our wonderful programs will have to wait until we can be “back in schools”. The fabulous day-long Art Days made possible by Assistance League Denver, Science Days, Multicultural Festivals, partnerships with Stories on Stage, the Denver Fire Department, the American Red Cross, and many others will just have to wait. But we’ll be back!

I believe strongly that the students of Denver will need and value the programs provided by Community Resources, Inc. even more when we finally move past the current pandemic. Compare sitting in front of a computer to the chance to learn about and touch a live pygmy hedgehog, or play a variety of instruments from Africa, or make “dragon’s breath” with Fruit Loops. Our terrific volunteers and program partners make these and hundreds of other educational experiences possible.

Stay tuned to see where this adventure takes us next. I trust you will be along for the ride!
